Customer Reviews

Review I learnt photography in the olden days. Back then, the 'standard' lens was a fast 50 mm lens... it's what all cameras came with. Of course modern short zooms are the norm now, and their quality is very good, but they lack the wide aperture that prime lenses enjoy. I have an array of lenses, mostly zooms, but this 50 mm f/1.8 is my go-to lens. I use it indoors and out on either a D200 or a D7100 body. On the D7100 I use it for stills and video. It produces such stunning images with lovely bokeh that you wonder why the f/1.4 version is SOOOOO much more expensive for half a stop. My only challenge is that on a DX body it is a bit long for close-quarters use. This makes it a good portrait lens however, and allows really good, close-cropped images without being 'up in their face' with the camera.

Review I am still rather a novice at photography but wanted to advance with another lens for portraiture. This lens fits the bill and has been producing wonderful close ups of people. The results are sharp and exceptionally detailed and I am getting used to the absence of a zoom. This has been a really good buy and I hope to progress with it still further.

Review This is an excellent lens. Very small and light. Comparatively cheap as well, but does not compromise on quality. I use it on my Nikon D3100 which is a DX camera and so focal length is 1.5 times. Bokeh is very good and appealing. I wish I could have gone for 50mm f1.4 but the price difference is a lot. I would recommend this if you like taking portraits.

Review I have not yet used this Lens but whatever little I have I am extremely impressed with the quality. I am delighted that I bought it. I am sure I shall use it a lot specially to take portraits.

Review I purchased this as a fast add-on to the kit lens (18-55 mm zoom). The lens is solid and well constructed, and the fitting into the camera is sound and tight. The range indicator on the side is a useful addition. AF on the DX format is fast and reasonably accurate, even in low light (helped by the wide maximum aperture). The minimum is less than the kit lens, but who really needs more than f 22 anyway? As for the pictures, the results are fantastic. In low light, you get warm well contrasted photos (you can pretty much dispense with the onboard flash with this lens). Results with the Nikon flashes (e.g. SB900) are very pleasing and natural and with the wide aperature range, you have a world of effects at your fingertips. The speed of the lens is also useful for action or family shots where you need to access the upper range of shutter speeds (even in lower light conditions) The bokeh (background blurring) at low depth of field is very pleasing, making this an ideal lens for portraiture. Colour reproduction, contrast, shodows and highlights come out well. To be honest, it has not been off my camera much since I purchased it (other than to use the 40mm micro, another outstanding lens). If you can't get enough in the picture, then simply stand back a bit. The only real drawback is that it's minimum focussing distance is about 50cm. However, the 40 mm micro fills the gap nicely. However, I thin kyou would have to have a very high-end camera to really notice any major defficiencies in this lens. If you are looking for a prime for your DX, then this is it!

Review I traded in a bunch of my old DX lenses plus my D7000 to fund a D800 - then needed a decent everyday lens for general out-and-about / family shots. 50mm lenses are regarded as something of a staple for most photographers - they can be used in a variety of situations and are a good compromise lens between wide-angle and telephoto work. Choosing between the f/1.4 and the f/1.8 was pretty easy infact - this is a smaller, lighter lens with quicker autofocus that is actually sharper at f/1.8 than its more expensive counterpart. Another benefit over its bigger brother is the addition of an aspherical element which Nikon claim reduces chromatic aberration and coma, although I can't comment on the real-world benefits of this. What I get is fast, reliable autofocus that works well in low-light conditions. The lens produces lovely subject isolation with great contrast and colour rendition. The centre sharpness is good at f/1.8 becoming very good at f/2.8 and the whole frame is pretty tack-sharp by f/4 but this won't affect the quality of your shots unless your technique is consistently flawless and you're printing huge sizes. Don't bother with a protective UV or skylight filter - the front element is recessed significantly and they add little to modern lenses which are all UV coated anyway. Overall it's hard to get this type of value for money from top-end manufacturers like Nikon - grab yourself a total bargain!

Review Having up-graded my Nikon D700 to the new D800 I decided to up-grade my 50mm f1.8D lens with the new AFS version. To my surprise this lens is better not only than my original 1.8, but also better than the f1.4 AFS version which is almost double the price, the 1.8 version focuses much faster than the f1.4. Main difference from older Nikon 50mm lenses is the 58mm filter size on both f1.8 & f1.4 replacing the familiar 52mm, and the built in Silent Wave Motor furthermore this lens will auto focus on all Nikon DSLR bodies including entry level versions from D40- D5100. The lens is an absolute bargain!

Review Every bit as sharp if not sharper than the more expensive f1.4 yet it is hardly any slower at all. If you can only buy one lens for your full frame Nikon buy this one and walk back and forward more while saving up for a zoom you will get much sharper results. Also makes a nice portrait lens for your DX camera and your left with a great standard lens when you trade up to FX. When it comes to quality Nikon lenses (and lets face it there not ALL good) I think this must be their best kept secret I don't think anyone realises that this is one of the best lenses Nikon make, when they see the price is one of the lowest.
