Nikon Z5 II Digital Camera Body

What’s new?

The Z5 II marks a significant step forward in Nikon’s entry-level full-frame line, led by the exceptional EXPEED 7 processor - the same imaging engine used in the Nikon Z8 and Z9. The Z5 II unlocks faster shooting, improved noise performance, and subject detection across nine categories, including people, animals and vehicles. Autofocus is 68% faster than the Z5 and significantly more responsive, with 3D Tracking, AI-trained subject recognition, and reliable low-light performance down to -10 EV.

The video features see a complete overhaul with the Z5 II. This camera adds internal N-RAW and N-Log recording, 4K 60p (cropped), 4K 30p, and Full HD 120p for slow motion - all recorded straight to SD cards. Additional tools like Electronic VR, High-Res Zoom and Product Review Mode offer a more complete setup for hybrid shooting. Pre-release capture, carried over from Nikon’s higher-end models, ensures you always capture key moments - even if you press the shutter a little late.

The Z5 II also expands Picture Controls from 8 to 31 presets, supports downloadable Nikon Imaging Recipes, and includes a dedicated Picture Control button for quick access. ISO performance has also improved, with a wider clean range of 64,000 for stills and 51,200 for video. Paired with Focus Point VR and a brighter 3000 cd/m² EVF, the redesigned body is clearer to shoot with and more responsive than its Z5 predecessor.

24.5MP sensor and EXPEED 7

The Z5 II features a 24.5MP full-frame CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100 to 64,000 for stills and up to 51,200 for video. It delivers clean, natural-looking results across various lighting conditions, whether shooting in daylight or at night. Powered by Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor - the same engine used in the Nikon Z8 and Z9 - the Z5 II handles image data quickly while improving noise control and subject recognition. A 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system provides up to 7.5 stops of compensation at the centre, helping to reduce blur in handheld or low-light shooting. Shutter speeds from 1/8000s to 900 seconds offer further flexibility for fast action and long exposures.

The Nikon Z5 II offers multiple high-speed shooting options to suit different needs. Extended mode captures full-resolution images at up to 14 fps, or up to 11 fps when using 14-bit RAW. High-Speed Frame Capture+ enables shooting at 30 fps in JPEG for even faster bursts. These upgrades make it far more capable of handling action, wildlife, or any fast-moving subject compared to the original Z5.

Improved autofocus

The Z5 II autofocus performance is significantly upgraded, with sensitivity down to -10 EV for reliable near-dark operation. Subject detection covers nine categories (including people, animals, and vehicles), whilst 3D Tracking ensures accurate focus, even with moving subjects or scenes requiring fast adjustments. The focus remains locked even in low light or when subjects occupy just 3% of the frame. The system intelligently distinguishes between still and moving targets using advanced Nikon AF algorithms. A dedicated Product Review Mode is ideal for vlogging or demonstrations, automatically switching focus between the presenter and items in front of the lens.

5-axis vibration reduction

Nikon’s 5-axis in-body VR system delivers up to 7.5 stops of compensation at the centre, paired with Focus Point VR to reduce blur even when the subject is away from the centre of the frame. This feature allows for longer handheld exposures, cleaner low-light results, and sharper images when recomposing. Whether capturing detail-rich stills or shooting handheld video, the Z5 II’s stabilisation system helps preserve clarity without needing a gimbal or tripod.

4K60P video and Hi-Res Zoom

The Nikon Z5 II supports 4K/30P video and 4K/60P cropped. Beyond resolution, the camera adds several features for filmmakers, inheriting the Hi-Res Zoom feature from the Nikon Z8 to bring smooth, lossless digital zoom to video even when using prime lenses. This feature enables up to 2.0× zoom without resolution drop, making it ideal for reframing during 4K recording while maintaining sharpness and detail.

Additionally, with 10-bit N-Log, HLG, and support for RED LUTs, colour grading is more flexible and precise for post-production. Nikon RED LUTs are preset colour files that make N-Log videos look more natural and ready to edit. This feature helps bring back contrast and colour, making footage easier to grade and match with other cameras, including those using the RED LUT colour system.

31 picture controls

The Z5 II features a dedicated Picture Control dial and an expanded library of 31 built-in presets, giving users quick access to creative tools. Each style can be previewed directly in-camera while composing your image, helping you fine-tune colour, tone, and contrast before you shoot. With support for Nikon Imaging Cloud, you can also download additional Picture Control recipes or share your own, making it easy to maintain a consistent visual style across projects.

Ergonomics and handling

The Z5 II is compatible with Nikon Z-mount lenses which each offer a variety of additional features when paired. This camera features a redesigned magnesium alloy body that prioritises balance, grip, and usability without adding bulk. Weighing approximately 700g, it remains well-suited to long shoots or handheld video work. The deep grip and intuitive button layout will feel immediately familiar to Nikon users, with one-handed access to key functions. Its 0.5” OLED EVF delivers accurate previews with 3690k-dot resolution and a standout 3000 cd/m² brightness, making it usable even in strong daylight. The 3.2-inch 2100k-dot vari-angle touchscreen supports flexible framing and intuitive touch control, while the vertical orientation UI rotates automatically for more straightforward operation when shooting in portrait mode.

The Nikon Z5 II is also compatible with the MB-N14 Power Battery Grip, which adds vertical controls for more comfortable portrait shooting and extended handling. The grip also houses additional battery capacity, allowing longer shooting sessions without interruption. It connects securely to the camera body and maintains weather sealing, making it a practical upgrade for users working in changing conditions.

Nikon Z 24-70mm f4 S Lens

The Nikon Z 24-70mm F4 S offers versatility while retaining the portability required from a CSC lens. Designed to reduce optical artefacts, the lens delivers outstanding clarity across the focal range, while an aperture of F4 through the lens aids shooting in low-light situations. The lens is also weather-sealed, as well as dust- and drip-resistant.
